Alzheimer's Drug May Ease Hair Pulling, Skin-Picking Disorders

Updated: Jun 20, 2024

Do you pick at your skin or cuticles, or pull out your hair? There is hope!

Trichotillomania and skin-picking disorders affect people of all ages, causing emotional distress and embarrassment. Recent studies highlight two promising options: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and Memantine.

In my practice, I've seen significant benefits for hair pulling with Memantine use, which was originallly used for Alzheimers Disease. I also have worked with people who had some moderate success with NAC for skin excoriation.

The combination has been shown to be particularly effective for both disorders. Researchers found that they help reduce these compulsive behaviors by affecting glutamate levels in the brain. If you're struggling with these issues, consult a healthcare professional about these potential treatments.

You are not alone, and effective help is available.
